Serendipity: the occurrence and development of events by chance in a happy or beneficial way.
Every spring is different, and this year, I’ve felt that difference more than ever! Our specialty tulips bloomed a full month earlier than they did last year and when tulip season arrives, it’s always a mad rush to harvest each bloom at the proper stage to ensure you get to enjoy every minute of their beauty.
After the whirlwind of tulip season, including our first-ever specialty tulip subscription, Mother’s Day, and our second attendance at the GemState 208 Market in Kuna, I was ready to take it easy for a bit and enjoy the quiet of spring, watching the plants grow and develop before the rest of our bouquet subscriptions kicked off in June.
But Mother Nature waits for no one!
This year, I sort of accidentally have flowers earlier than I ever have before! I say accidentally because I didn’t plan them or even plant them—is true serendipitous fashion they planted themselves!
Last season in August, after I was finished harvesting from a particular bed that had most of my spring flowers, I didn’t have the time or energy to remove the old, tired plants and prep the bed for spring planting. The mess of tall, gangly, dried-up plants was overwhelming for me.
Seeing my frustration, my sweet husband came to the rescue. He mowed down all the old plants and tilled the bed, giving me a clean slate, clearing my to-do list and the space it was taking up in my brain! In doing so, he also unintentionally shook out all the seeds from those old, tired spring plants, then tilled the bed, mixing those seeds into the soil.
It turned out to be the perfect time for those seeds to germinate and create strong root systems before winter hit. Amazingly, they almost all survived the winter in better condition than many of the ones I intentionally planted last fall! (Maybe he should be the flower farmer!)
Because they were started so early in August, they are now big, beautiful plants and starting to produce gorgeous spring blooms earlier than I have ever had them before. So here we are in late May, and I have already begun having bouquets available!
The Lesson: Embrace the Unexpected
This experience got me thinking about how sometimes the best things happen when we least expect them. Just like my early blooms, sometimes opportunities arise from the simplest actions.
