The Dairy Barn FAV Flowers Series - Snapdragons

Part 2 in The Dairy Barn Fav Flowers series and today we are talking about Snapdragons!

I grew up with regular garden store variety snapdragons all over my moms garden beds. They reseeded themselves and came back more beautiful and plentiful each season. So it was fitting that Snapdragons were some of the first cut flower seeds I purchased and have since discovered so many gorgeous varieties!

If you look closely at the picture below you can see the subtle differences in the petals shape and texture. I have four different varieties on the table there - Potomac, Chantilly, Madam Butterfly, and Costa. Not only are the petal shapes different but snapdragons actually come in different “groups” depending on what conditions they bloom in (day length, light intensity, and temperature) the Chantilly and Costa varieties are group 1-2 meaning they prefer the cooler temperatures and can bloom even in the shorter days of spring. Most reports say they are the earliest blooming varieties. Potomac and Rocket (another variety I grow but isn’t pictured) are groups 3-4 meaning they need more light to bloom but can also tolerate more heat as they get into the summer. The Madam Butterfly isn’t group specific and blooms when she sees fit but her double petals and rich colors make her one of my favorites .

Snapdragons are also a cool flower but I’m not actually sowing them this spring because I fall planted them I currently have over 200 baby plants in their bed waiting for the warmer weather to take off and grow! I’m so excited for what they will look like all in bloom!
